How we built the gun fight

A frame-by-frame look at the Ludo Fighters capture: stopping one square short, three shots, the knockout, smoke and respawn, safe-star shields and skipping.

Update, 8 November 2026: the fight described below is the original three-shot duel. Each fight now picks a weapon: pistol, rifle burst or shotgun, a single sniper shot (more likely across a long gap), or a grenade lobbed on an arc. When a fight happens has not changed. See what is in the release build.

The gun fight is the reason Ludo Fighters exists, so it had to be good. It also had to be short. Ludo already has plenty of waiting, and a capture that drags would make the game worse, not better. Here is how the fight works and the decisions behind it.

Rule first: when does a fight happen?

Exactly when a capture would happen in normal Ludo. Your roll has to land you exactly on an enemy soldier, and that enemy cannot be on a safe star. We did not add new ways to start a fight. That keeps the game recognisable: if you know when a capture happens in Ludo, you know when a fight happens here.

Stopping one square short

Two soldiers standing on the same square would be hard to read, so the attacker stops one square short. It marches the roll as normal, but halts on the square before the enemy. That gives both soldiers room to face each other, and it reads at a glance: two soldiers side by side, rifles up, is a fight.

The timeline

Once the attacker stops, the fight runs in a fixed order:

  1. Rifles up. Both soldiers switch to their aiming pose and face each other.
  2. Three shots. Three muzzle flashes, each with a recorded pistol shot.
  3. Knockout. The enemy gets X eyes and falls over, with a body-fall sound.
  4. Smoke. It vanishes in a puff of smoke.
  5. Respawn. It reappears in its own base with a short teleport sound.
  6. Step in. The attacker steps onto the square it captured.

From start to finish that is about 1.3 seconds.

Why three shots?

Three gives the fight a rhythm you can feel without slowing the game down: bang, bang, bang, down.

Making it skippable

Some players will watch every fight. Some will want to get on with it. Both are fine, so:

  • Tap the board at any point and the fight skips to the end.
  • Fast animations shortens the fight to about 0.8 seconds.
  • Reduce motion in settings skips the fights and the hops altogether.

Shields on safe stars

Safe stars always protected a piece in Ludo, but you had to remember the rule. We wanted the board to tell you. A soldier on a safe star carries a shield: if a shot is fired at it, the shot bounces off with a ricochet sound and a blue dome flashes up.

Winning a fight earns a turn

In house rules, winning a gun fight can give you an extra turn, alongside rolling a 6 and getting a soldier home. Each is its own switch, so you can play the way your table always has.

Cartoon, on purpose

The soldiers are cartoons. There is no blood and no gore: a knocked-out soldier gets X eyes, falls over and respawns. The point is the drama of the moment, not violence.

You can see a fight play out on the gun fights page.
